Discussion:
New Leafs GM? Who do you think?

Now that trade deadline is done and Cliffy is thoroughly pissed at some of
the guys with Clauses that even Santa wouldn't want to be associated with,
it's time to see who will have to deal with the mess JFJ has left behind.
Talks of buying out contracts and making life hell for some that wouldn't
waive this week.

Any thoughts on who may get hired or who would be a good fit to clean up
this mess?

Heard Colin Campbell discussed again today with reports that he has all but
signed.

Darryl ,I'm sure you have strong opinions here and I'm curious to see who
you think would be a good fit (or even what type of GM they should hire).

Someone with experience or a greenhorn? Within the organization? A current
GM from another team. I honeslty can't imagine B Burke leaving Anaheim but
if they repeat he may just decide to uproot and accept the challenge.

Sorry but Bob Gainey is not available ;)

Whoever it is, he has to have total control over the club, and be free from
the politics of Tennenbaum, Peddie, the teachers' pension plan, etc. I think
Ken Dryden would have been great for the job, and IMHO if it weren't for the
politics of running the Leafs, he would have never left for the politics of
government.

That being said, I also want to see some new blood in the role, and not the
old boys club (Fletcher, Bowman, Muckler. etc). Burke and Holland are very
happy in their roles, and I don't know why their names ever enter the
equation. Leave well enough alone. If Steve Yzerman is ready for a GM job,
it could be him, or the Wings could promote him and indeed let Holland go.
Othwerwise, I think Doug Gilmour, Ron Francis, Al Macinnis or Joe Nieuwendyk
are all up-and-coming players-turned-front-office-guys capable of doing just
as good a job as any of the old boys club.

Yes, Garth Snow may have an MBA, but he has done quite well for himself as
GM of the Isles, and he went straight from the jersey to the suit. All the
other guys I mentioned have had 2-3 years training. (and no, it wasn't Snow
who gave up the farm for Ryan Smyth. That had Charles Wang written all over
it, so no team is safe from owners' meddling)

ed, the more i give this thoguht, the more i come back to burke...the
team is owned by a bunch of teachers that know nothing about hockey
but lavish in the fact that it is the most financially successful
franchise out there.....the "ballard" thinking is back on us again, in

the seats are always full anyway....

burke would bring the stak reality to the owners of "....a succesful
team on the ice would invigorate the fanbase and sales of paraphenalia
would skyrocket, thereby increasing the profit margins, he is a ggreat
seller....and he is a great builder.....a great drafter, ...and well
respected by most players for his committment to winning....there is
no committment to winning in toronto right now and hasnt been since

Wouldn't be much surprise to most if he does move to TO. For sure he would
have it in writing that He makes the hockey decisions (much the same as the
basketball decisions are made). There;s also the talk about his wife and her
broadcasting career. I expect they would ensure some Ontario network would
take care of her also.

If he does indeed head over there will be lots of change because he will be
in control. With the lack of discussion on this topic in the media, it
almost seems like a decision has been made but nothing can happen until the
season ends.

I would love to see him in TO though. I hate the Leafs and I hate Burke (as
a GM - I've never met the man). Just makes it easier to keep my loyalty in
the right place ;-)

Sundin will either retire or go to a different team next year.... he'd
have to be absolutely crazy to stay with the leafs, the little run
they're putting on now it's just worsening their draft
positioning...this team is gonna be bad for a while

I don't recall him saying if he came back it would be with the
leafs........ If he has any desire to play hockey and win then he
won't suit up for the leafs again after this season
