usenet sometimes, I guess. :)
I'm a Habs fan. Huge one. I was just saying that the last thing I want to
give leafs nation might be amusing). Sundin is a player who's recently
game, and that effectiveness will only start to decrease with his age. I
think it would be a waste of a roster spot for Montreal.
Post by Randall StephensI think Mats would be great in a Canadiens uniform. Put your team
loyalties aside. The Leafs are going nowhere for the next few seasons, and
as a UFA at 37 there are only a few teams which can afford Sundin and
still give him a decent shot at winning a Cup (maybe Denver, for a
Forsberg-Sakic-Foote reunion?).
Mats is not obligated to return to the Leafs. That being said, he should
have agreed to waive the no-trade clause last spring so the Leafs could
get something back for him. Wherever he signs this summer, it should only
be for 1 year at a time, as players over 35 who retire while still under
contract are still part of their team's salary cap. Joe Sakic has been
playing year-to-year for several years now, so he doesn't "screw" the
Avalanche should he decide to retire while still having a year or more on
a contract.
As for salary, despite his production, at 37 Mats Sundin should be a $3.5
to $4M player, no more. He has enough money, and taking a little less at
this age lets a team free up a little more money to pay somebody else. As
a Canadiens fan I'd love to see him in Montreal, but if he decides to
sign elsewhere, that's his right. Johnny Damon left the Red Sox for the
Yankees. Bobby Rayburn left the Braves for the Giants. Sure, they got
booed, but it was their right to leave. The Red Sox won another World
Series without Damon; there's a chance (cough, cough) that the Leafs
could win a Cup without Sundin.
It's all about player choice. Tough as it sounds, they owe the fans nothing.
